Ferris wheel fire at German festival injures more than 20

BERLIN - A tragic incident occurred on Saturday night when a Ferris wheel caught fire at a music festival near Leipzig, Germany, resulting in over 20 injuries, as reported by a police spokesperson to AFP.

The fire erupted just after 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) on two gondolas at the Highfield Festival and was swiftly contained. Among the injured, four individuals suffered burns, one was hurt in a fall, and 18 others experienced smoke inhalation, according to the police spokesperson. Additionally, several members of the police force and firefighters who responded to the incident were also injured.

German media published images depicting the fiery ordeal, with flames consuming the gondolas of the spinning Ferris wheel, and thick black smoke rising above the ride. Emergency services, including helicopters and fire crews, responded promptly, and all the injured were transported to a nearby hospital.

The Highfield Festival, known as the largest independent rock festival, annually draws thousands of visitors to the shores of the man-made Lake Stormthaler outside Leipzig. This year's lineup featured popular artists such as Macklemore, The Kooks, Flogging Molly, and Rise Against.

The incident underscores the importance of safety measures at large public gatherings and the swift response of emergency services in mitigating the impact of such accidents.
